When her mother pulls her from school and allows a doctor to treat her scoliosis with a cumbersome body cast, 15 year old Sarah McCoombs thinks life can't get much worse.

It’s June of 1863, and the Confederate Army is just about to invade her sleepy little corner of Pennsylvania. In a matter of days, the nearby town of Gettysburg will become the center of one of the largest battles the United States has ever known, and the McCoombs farm turns into a battlefield. When the family climbs out of the cellar, where they have taken refuge, they find their fields filled with the dead and dying and their house turned into a hospital. Sarah must put aside her worry for her brother Micah and neighbor Martin, both serving in the Union Army and reach deep inside herself to find the strength to nurse wounded soldiers from both sides.
